All name numerology rests on one simple table: every letter is a number. A is 1, B is 2, and so on to I at 9 — then the count starts over, so J is 1 again. That table is what turns a name into a Destiny number, a Soul Urge and a Personality number.
But each letter also means something on its own — a first initial carries particular weight, and a letter that appears many times in a name (or not at all) shapes it. Below is every letter, its value, and what it brings.

The Pythagorean table
Letters are valued 1–9 in order and then repeat: 1 AJS · 2 BKT · 3 CLU · 4 DMV · 5 ENW · 6 FOX · 7 GPY · 8 HQZ · 9 IR. This is the Pythagorean system, which the whole site uses. The older Chaldean system assigns different values and never uses 9 — see our systems comparison for the difference.

What number is each letter?
In the Pythagorean system letters run 1 to 9 and then repeat: A J S are 1, B K T are 2, C L U are 3, D M V are 4, E N W are 5, F O X are 6, G P Y are 7, H Q Z are 8, and I R are 9.
Why does J start over at 1?
Because there are 26 letters and only nine digits. After I reaches 9 the count simply begins again, which is why the tenth letter J returns to 1.
How is the Chaldean system different?
Chaldean numerology assigns different values to the letters and never uses 9 at all, holding it to be sacred. It is older than the Pythagorean system, and it produces different numbers from the same name.
