Black

Black resonates with the number 8 — power, authority, and the mastery of material forces. Black absorbs all light and reflects none: it is total authority over its own boundaries. Unlike white, which gives everything away, black retains all. In its highest expression, black is the colour of the deep intelligence at the heart of matter, the pregnant darkness from which all creation emerges.

Black is absorptive — it takes in energy rather than reflecting it. This creates an effect of power and protection (black absorbs negative energy too) but also of heaviness or invisibility if overused. Black is grounding and focusing, removing distractions and forcing awareness to what is essential.

In spiritual traditions, black holds profound paradox: it represents both death and the womb of creation. The Void, the Abyss, the Great Mother, Kali — the divine feminine creative destruction force — are often depicted in black. The universe itself is predominantly black. In Tibetan Buddhism, the black wrathful deities represent the fierce compassion that cuts through delusion.
