Bridge Number

A Bridge Number is the difference between two core numbers, and its purpose is entirely practical. Most charts contain at least one pair of numbers that do not naturally get along: a Life Path that wants stability sitting next to a Soul Urge that wants escape, a Destiny that demands visibility beside a Personality that projects reserve. The Bridge Number is what you would need to develop for those two to stop pulling against each other.

The most commonly read bridge is between the Life Path and the Destiny — between the road you are on and the work you are meant to do. A large gap here tends to feel like a life spent slightly out of position: capable, functioning, quietly miscast. The bridge names the missing quality that would let the two cooperate rather than compete.

A bridge of 0 is the notable case: it means the two numbers are identical, and there is no gap to close. This is usually described as fortunate and is not entirely so, because it also means the chart lacks tension, and tension is where most people find their motive force. The smaller bridges (1 and 2) are easily crossed. The larger ones (4 and above) describe a genuine internal negotiation, and generally the most interesting people have one.

How to calculate

Take the absolute difference between two core numbers — most often the Life Path and the Destiny. Example: Life Path 8 and Destiny 3 gives a Bridge Number of 5. The same method works for the Soul Urge and Personality pair.
