Chinese Numerology
The Chinese approach to numbers, where luck is judged mainly by homophones — 8 sounds like "prosper" and is lucky, 4 sounds like "death" and is avoided — alongside the Lo Shu birth-date grid.
Chinese numerology is unlike any Western system, because a number's fortune depends chiefly on what it sounds like. Many numbers are near-homophones of ordinary words, and that resemblance decides whether they are auspicious. The number 8 (bā) resembles fā, "to prosper," and is the most sought-after number in Chinese culture; 6 (liù) suggests smooth progress; 9 (jiǔ) sounds like "long-lasting" and is linked to eternity and, historically, the emperor.
The flip side is that 4 (sì) resembles sǐ, "death," and is strongly avoided — many buildings across East Asia skip the 4th, 14th and 24th floors just as Western buildings once skipped the 13th. The number 7 carries mixed spiritual and funerary associations, while combinations matter too: 168 reads as "a road to prosperity," and 250 is an insult in some regions.
These beliefs have real economic weight. Phone numbers, licence plates, addresses and even flight numbers loaded with 8s sell at a premium, and the 2008 Beijing Olympics opened at 8:08:08 pm on 8/8/2008. Alongside this sound-based luck runs a second strand — the Lo Shu Grid, a 3×3 magic square in which the digits of a birth date are plotted to map strengths and missing numbers.
How to calculate
No reduction is used for luck judgments — meaning comes from sound: 8 (prosper) and 6 (smooth) are lucky; 4 (death) and often 7 are avoided; 9 means longevity. For a character reading, plot the digits of the birth date onto the Lo Shu grid (4-9-2 / 3-5-7 / 8-1-6) and read the filled and empty cells.
