Vedic Numerology

The Indian system of numerology (Ank Jyotish) that links each number 1โ€“9 to a planet and reads a person through their Psychic (birth-day) and Destiny (full-date) numbers.

Vedic Numerology โ€” known in India as Ank Jyotish โ€” is one of the world's most widely practised numerological traditions, rooted in the same framework as Vedic astrology (Jyotish). Its defining feature is that every number from 1 to 9 is governed by a planet, so a number's meaning is inseparable from the qualities of its ruling graha.

Two numbers sit at the centre of a Vedic reading. The Psychic Number (Moolank) is your day of birth reduced to a single digit; it describes how you see yourself and your instinctive drives. The Destiny Number (Bhagyank) is your full birth date reduced; it describes how the outer world responds to you and the direction your life takes. A name number (Namank) is often added for a fuller picture.

The planetary rulerships are: 1 = Sun (leadership, ego, vitality), 2 = Moon (emotion, receptivity), 3 = Jupiter (wisdom, expansion), 4 = Rahu (the shadow node โ€” unconventional, restless), 5 = Mercury (intellect, communication, commerce), 6 = Venus (love, beauty, luxury), 7 = Ketu (the south node โ€” spirituality, detachment), 8 = Saturn (discipline, karma, delayed reward) and 9 = Mars (energy, courage, conflict). Reading a person through their planets gives Vedic numerology a distinctive, astrologically grounded flavour.

How to calculate

Psychic (Moolank) = day of birth reduced to one digit (e.g., 23rd โ†’ 2+3 = 5, ruled by Mercury). Destiny (Bhagyank) = full date of birth reduced to one digit. Map each number to its ruling planet to interpret. Master numbers are generally reduced in the Vedic system.
