Synchronicity
Jung's term for meaningful coincidence without causal connection โ the conceptual foundation beneath angel numbers and repeated sightings.
Synchronicity was coined by Carl Jung to name a class of events he considered real and could not explain causally: coincidences that carry meaning for the person experiencing them without any mechanism linking the two halves. His standard example involved a patient describing a dream of a golden scarab at the exact moment a rose-chafer beetle tapped at the consulting-room window. Nothing caused the other. The coincidence was, nonetheless, the turning point of the treatment.
The concept matters to numerology because it is the honest foundation of angel numbers. Seeing 11:11 repeatedly does not mean the clock is being manipulated. It means the sighting is landing as meaningful, and Jung's argument was that meaning of this kind is not automatically an error โ that the psyche organises experience around such moments regardless of whether physics endorses them, and that dismissing them as coincidence describes the mechanism while entirely missing the phenomenon.
The sceptical counter-explanation is frequency illusion: once a number is salient you notice it everywhere, and the pattern is manufactured by attention rather than discovered by it. This is almost certainly true and is not, on Jung's account, a refutation. The question a synchronicity raises is not why you saw the number. It is why that number, and why now, and why it landed โ and those questions remain interesting even after the mechanism has been fully deflated.
How to calculate
Not a calculation. Synchronicity is the interpretive principle behind repeated number sightings โ the position that a meaningful coincidence can be worth reading even where no causal link exists.
