Reduction

Reduction is the engine of the entire system. Take any number, add its digits together, and if the result has more than one digit, repeat until a single digit remains. 1987 becomes 1+9+8+7 = 25, which becomes 2+5 = 7. Every core number in numerology is produced this way, and the operation is old enough and general enough to have several names: theosophical reduction in the esoteric literature, digital rooting in mathematics, where it is a well-defined and entirely unmysterious function.

The single rule that matters is the exception. Master numbers — 11, 22 and 33 — are not reduced when they appear as a total, because the tradition holds that their doubled structure carries a charge that reduction would destroy. A total of 11 stays 11; it does not become 2. The exception has exactly one exception of its own: in calculating the Challenge numbers, master numbers are reduced like any other, because the Challenges work by subtraction and require ordinary single digits.

The other point of care is the order of operations. Reducing each component of a birth date separately and then summing the results does not always give the same answer as adding everything at once — the two methods can diverge precisely where a master number is involved, since reducing early can destroy an 11 that summing late would have preserved. This is the source of most disagreements about a person's Life Path, and the component-first method is the one the mainstream Pythagorean tradition uses.

How to calculate

Add all the digits of the number together. If the result has more than one digit, repeat. Stop at a single digit — unless the total is 11, 22 or 33, which are kept as master numbers.
