Lo Shu Grid

The Lo Shu Grid is one of the oldest tools in numerology — a 3×3 magic square from ancient China in which the numbers 1 to 9 are arranged so that every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15. Legend traces it to markings on the shell of a turtle that emerged from the River Lo more than four thousand years ago.

In modern practice, the individual digits of your full date of birth are placed into their fixed cells in the grid. The classic arrangement runs 4-9-2 across the top, 3-5-7 across the middle and 8-1-6 across the bottom. Every time a digit appears in your birth date, it is written into its cell; digits that never appear leave that cell empty.

The reading comes from the pattern. Numbers that repeat point to intensified, sometimes overdeveloped traits. Empty cells — the "missing numbers" — point to qualities you did not arrive with and are here to consciously cultivate, much like the Karmic Lessons of the Western tradition. Because the grid is visual, it gives an immediate, at-a-glance portrait of an entire birth date.

How to calculate

Write out your full date of birth as individual digits (e.g., 22-11-1988 → 2,2,1,1,1,9,8,8). Place each digit into its fixed cell in the 4-9-2 / 3-5-7 / 8-1-6 grid. Note which cells fill up (strengths) and which stay empty (missing numbers / lessons). The 5 in the centre represents balance and the heart of the chart.
