Growth Number
Derived from your first name alone, the Growth Number acts as a lens on the whole chart — the recurring quality through which your Life Path energy actually develops day to day.
The Growth Number is calculated from your first name — the name you are called most — and works as a modifier on the entire chart. If the Life Path is the road you travel, the Growth Number is the vehicle: it colours how that journey actually unfolds in ordinary, moment-to-moment life. It explains why two people on the same Life Path can travel it so differently depending on the name they answer to every day.
To find it, add the Pythagorean values of every letter in your first name and reduce. "John," for instance, gives J=1, O=6, H=8, N=5 = 20 → 2, a Growth Number 2: growth through partnership, patience and cooperation.
The Growth Number points to the quality through which you most naturally learn and mature. A Growth 5 develops through change, variety and experience — saying yes to the new — and stagnates when boxed in. A Growth 4 grows through the opposite: structure, patience and consistent effort. Because it is drawn from the first name, it is one of the most practical numbers in a chart, describing the texture of everyday progress rather than the grand arc of a lifetime.
How to calculate
Add the Pythagorean values of every letter in your first name only (a=1, b=2 … i=9, j=1 …) and reduce to a single digit or master number. Example: MARY → 4+1+9+7 = 21 → 3. Growth Number 3.
