The Destiny Number (also called the Expression Number) is calculated from the full name given at birth using Pythagorean numerology — each letter is assigned a value (a=1, b=2, c=3... i=9, j=1...), the values are summed and reduced to a single digit or master number.
Where the Life Path Number describes the road you travel, the Destiny Number describes what you do on that road — your natural gifts, your characteristic way of operating in the world and the specific contribution you are here to make.
The Destiny Number is calculated from the birth name — including middle names — because numerologists believe the name you were given at birth reflects the soul's intention for this lifetime. Names chosen later (including married names, nicknames and professional names) create additional numerological layers but do not replace the original Destiny.
How to calculate
Assign each letter of your full birth name its Pythagorean value (a=1, b=2, c=3, d=4, e=5, f=6, g=7, h=8, i=9, j=1, k=2, l=3, m=4, n=5, o=6, p=7, q=8, r=9, s=1, t=2, u=3, v=4, w=5, x=6, y=7, z=8). Sum all values and reduce to single digit or master number.
